Why Purifying the Heart Is Necessary

As a room gets dirty, clothes get dirty, and the body gets dirty, we clean them one by one and do not allow them to remain dirty.

This is the example of our hearts and souls. They need to be cleaned day by day and time by time. For this reason, the Qur’an and Hadith call our attention to continuous purification of the soul.

A companion of the Prophet ﷺ once came and said, “O Prophet of Allah, I committed a wrongdoing. I hugged a woman.” He thought this sin required punishment.

When the time of prayer came, he prayed with the Prophet ﷺ. After the prayer, he returned and asked again. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Did you not pray with us?”
He replied, “Yes.”

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Go on your way. Indeed, good deeds remove bad deeds.”
(Surah Hud: 114)

If fard prayers remove sins, then what would be our state if we perform nafl worship and actively work on purifying our hearts?

The Need for Guidance on the Path of Tazkiyah

That is why we need companions on this journey. Sometimes this is a righteous spouse, sometimes a teacher or imam, and sometimes a book that guides us to the right path.

Our brother Qari Tariq Azizi has written this book with the intention of helping Muslims understand and cure the spiritual diseases of the heart. I sincerely appreciate his effort. May Allah reward him and encourage our brothers and sisters to begin the journey of Tazkiyat an-Nafs.
